Why Rug Size Is the Most Important Decision
The single most common interior design mistake involving rugs is choosing a rug that is too small. A rug that does not properly anchor a seating area or dining table makes the room feel ungrounded and disconnected. The right size rug transforms a space.
Our fourth-generation specialists at Ashly Fine Rugs have helped Houston clients size rugs for every type of space. Here is the definitive room-by-room guide.
Living Room Rug Sizing
The general rule: all major seating pieces should have at least their front legs on the rug. All legs on the rug is ideal in larger rooms.
- Small living room (up to 12×15 ft) — Use an 8×10 rug. Place it so all sofa front legs rest on it.
- Medium living room (12×15 to 15×20 ft) — A 9×12 is the standard choice. Most sofas and chairs should have all legs on the rug.
- Large or open-plan space (over 15×20 ft) — Use a 10×14, 11×15, or 12×18. In very large rooms, two rugs can define separate seating areas.
Leave 18–24 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the wall.
Dining Room Rug Sizing
The rug must extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides so that pulled-out chairs remain on the rug.
- 4-person table — Minimum 8×10 rug
- 6-person table — Minimum 9×12 rug
- 8–10 person table — Minimum 10×14 or 11×15 rug
Bedroom Rug Sizing
Place the rug so that it extends 18–24 inches beyond each side and the foot of the bed. When you step out of bed, your feet should land on the rug.
- Queen bed — 8×10 minimum; 9×12 ideal
- King bed — 9×12 minimum; 10×14 ideal
- Twin bed — A 5×8 or 6×9, placed at the foot of the bed
Entryway and Hallway Sizing
For entryways, choose a rug that fills the space but leaves 6–12 inches of bare floor on each side. In hallways, the runner width should leave equal space on each side — typically 3 inches per side.
