What Determines the Price of a Persian Rug?
Persian rug pricing is determined by a combination of factors, not a single variable. Understanding these factors helps buyers make informed decisions and identify fair value when purchasing a handmade rug. Our fourth-generation specialists at Ashly Fine Rugs have evaluated thousands of rugs over 130+ years; here is how we approach pricing.
The Six Key Price Factors
1. Age and Rarity
Antique rugs (80+ years old) generally command higher prices than vintage (30–79 years) or new rugs of similar quality. Within the antique category, pre-1900 rugs using exclusively natural dyes are rarer and more valuable than early 20th-century production. Rugs from historically significant weaving periods — Safavid court rugs, early Kashan workshop pieces, pre-industrial Heriz village rugs — are extraordinarily rare and command museum-level prices.
2. Knot Density (KPSI)
Knots per square inch (KPSI) is a measure of technical refinement. Fine Kashan and Isfahan workshop rugs can have 300–700+ KPSI. Village and tribal rugs may have 30–80 KPSI. Higher KPSI generally means finer detail, longer production time, and higher price — but exceptional low-KPSI tribal rugs can be highly valuable for artistic and historical reasons.
3. Size
Larger rugs require proportionally more time and material to produce. All else equal, a 10×14 rug will cost roughly twice as much as a 6×9 from the same origin and period. Large antique rugs (12×18 and above) are increasingly rare and command significant premiums.
4. Condition
A rug in excellent original condition — full pile, no repairs, no restoration — is worth significantly more than an identical rug with pile loss or structural repairs. Professional restoration by expert hands can preserve value; amateur repairs significantly reduce it.
5. Origin
Rugs from prestige workshops (Kashan, Isfahan, Tabriz, Qum) typically command higher prices than village or tribal rugs of similar age and size. However, exceptional tribal pieces — rare Bakshaish medallions, early Baluch bags — can match or exceed workshop rug prices.
6. Design and Color
Unusual colorways, rare patterns, and exceptional artistic quality add significant value. A Heriz rug in an unusual green palette, for example, will command a premium over the same rug in standard red-and-navy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Persian rugs worth the investment?
Quality handmade Persian rugs, particularly antique pieces, have historically held or appreciated in value over time. Unlike machine-made rugs that depreciate with use, a well-maintained antique Persian rug can become more valuable as it ages.
Why do some Persian rugs cost so much?
A fine antique Persian rug may represent 1–3 years of skilled hand-knotting by one or more artisans, using premium natural wool or silk, natural dyes, and traditional design expertise passed down through generations. The price reflects this extraordinary investment of human skill and time.
