OUSHAK
Oushak Rugs — Western Turkey’s Greatest Weaving Tradition
Among all the rug-producing regions of the Islamic world, few have left a mark on Western interiors as profound as Oushak. Woven in and around the town of Uşak in the Aegean region of western Turkey, Oushak rugs have graced the palaces of European royalty, the galleries of New York’s finest dealers, and the showrooms of the world’s leading interior designers for more than five centuries. Their distinctive combination of large-scale, open composition, warm earthy tones, and extraordinarily supple wool has made them the universal language of luxury interior design.
At Ashly Fine Rugs in Houston, we maintain one of the finest Oushak collections in Texas. Our showroom at 4222 Richmond Ave currently holds more than 90 Oushak rugs — antique pieces from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, semi-antique rugs from the mid-century decades, and new hand-knotted Oushaks woven on our own looms in a range of sizes and palette variants. Our fourth-generation specialists have handled thousands of Oushak rugs over the decades, and the knowledge we bring to every purchase is the foundation of our clients’ confidence.
The Oushak Weaving Tradition
Weaving in the Oushak region dates to at least the fifteenth century, when the Ottoman court actively patronized Anatolian rug production. The rugs produced in this era — characterized by large-scale arabesque designs in terracotta red and gold — appear in the backgrounds of Flemish and Italian Renaissance paintings, giving rise to their art-historical designation as “Lotto carpets” or “Bellini carpets.” The great European trading families acquired them as symbols of wealth and civilized taste.
By the nineteenth century, the Oushak tradition had evolved considerably. Western demand drove production of larger carpets in softer, more neutralized palettes — the warm ivory grounds, dusty blues, and soft corals that define the classic collector Oushak. Manchester and London trading firms, following the model pioneered by Ziegler & Co. in Persia, commissioned rugs designed to harmonize with Western furniture and architecture. The result was a body of work that is simultaneously deeply Turkish in character and universally compatible in virtually any interior setting.
What Makes Oushak Rugs Distinctive
The Open Field Composition
The defining visual quality of the classic Oushak is its breathing, open field. Where Persian city rugs often pack their designs with dense floral detail, the Oushak spreads its motifs — typically large medallions, palmettes, or cloud-band arabesques — across an expansive, lightly decorated ground. This openness gives the rug a quality of calm authority that works equally in a room full of antique furniture and in a pared-back contemporary interior.
The Palette
Oushak rugs are known for a palette unlike that of any other weaving tradition. The warm ivory and cream grounds. The soft terracotta and rose pinks. The dusty sage and turquoise blues. The muted gold and wheat tones. These colors, derived from natural vegetable dyes and aged by decades of light exposure, create the characteristic Oushak glow that no synthetic dye program has successfully replicated. In a genuine antique or semi-antique Oushak, the colors exist in a state of harmonious equilibrium — no single hue dominates, and the whole radiates a warmth that photographers consistently struggle to capture.
The Wool
Turkish wool — particularly the fleece of sheep from the Aegean uplands — has long been considered among the finest in the weaving world. Oushak weavers worked with long-staple, hand-spun wool that compresses under foot traffic to a silk-like patina rather than felting or matting. The pile in a well-preserved antique Oushak has a visual depth and luminosity that increases with age. This is wool that genuinely improves over time, which is why Oushak rugs from the late nineteenth century are more beautiful today than the day they left the loom.
Scale and Format
Oushak rugs were produced in an exceptionally wide range of sizes — from small accent pieces to room-filling palace carpets measuring 20 feet and beyond. The largest Oushak format, the “palace” or “saray” carpet, was woven for the great houses of Europe and the imperial Ottoman court. At Ashly Fine Rugs, our collection includes pieces in virtually every format — from 4×6 accent rugs to 12×18 palace carpets — all sharing the essential Oushak character.
Antique vs. Semi-Antique vs. New Oushak Rugs
The Oushak market encompasses rugs from three distinct periods, each with its own character and price point:
Antique Oushak Rugs (pre-1920)
The most coveted pieces in the collector market. Antique Oushaks carry the full patina of natural vegetable dyes — colors that have spent a century or more harmonizing under light, foot traffic, and the natural oils of wool aging. The wool in a genuine antique Oushak has a depth and lustre that newer pieces simply do not yet possess. These are investment-grade objects that appreciate in value and become family heirlooms. Ashly Fine Rugs carries a curated selection of antique Oushaks authenticated by our fourth-generation specialists.
Semi-Antique Oushak Rugs (1920–1970)
Rugs from the mid-twentieth century occupy a sweet spot for many buyers: old enough to carry genuine character and natural patina, young enough to be found in good condition, and priced below the most significant antique pieces. Many of the great Turkish workshops continued weaving in the traditional manner through the 1950s and beyond, and the best semi-antique Oushaks share the wool quality and dye character of their antique predecessors.
New Hand-Knotted Oushak Rugs
Ashly Fine Rugs operates its own looms, producing new hand-knotted Oushak-style rugs in a range of sizes and palette variants designed to complement the aesthetic of genuine antique pieces. Our new Oushaks are made with quality wool and natural dye programs inspired by the traditional palette. They do not yet carry the patina of age, but they are genuinely handmade and built to develop character over decades. For clients who need a specific size or color that no available antique provides, a new hand-knotted Oushak is the natural solution.
Interior Design with Oushak Rugs
Interior designers have long recognized Oushak rugs as perhaps the most versatile floor covering in the world. Their open, breathing compositions work in large rooms without overwhelming them. Their warm, neutralized palettes complement both antique furniture and the clean lines of contemporary design. Their scale — typically generous — gives them the presence to anchor a significant room without the visual complexity of a densely patterned Persian medallion carpet.
Oushak rugs pair particularly well with:
- French and English antique furniture, where their Ottoman character creates a rich cross-cultural dialogue
- Contemporary interiors in warm neutrals — the rug becomes the room’s focal point without competing with the architecture
- Transitional spaces where the homeowner wants the warmth of a traditional rug without the formality of a Persian medallion design
- Large open-plan spaces, where the rug’s scale and visual calm help organize and humanize the room
How to Choose an Oushak Rug
When evaluating an Oushak rug for purchase, our specialists look for the following:
- Pile depth and condition: Even, consistent pile with no significant bald areas. Some wear at the edges or in specific high-traffic zones is acceptable and normal in antique pieces.
- Color integrity: Natural, harmonious fading across the field. Uneven or garish color variation may indicate chemical washing or re-dyeing, which reduces value.
- Wool quality: Supple, not brittle. The pile should feel alive, not dry. Dry, brittle wool is a sign of improper storage or aggressive chemical treatment.
- Foundation integrity: The warp and weft threads should be sound. A rug with a compromised foundation — broken warps or weft damage — is structurally vulnerable regardless of how good the pile looks.
- Repairs: Minor professional repairs to ends and selvedges are normal in antique pieces. Major reweaving of the field, if skillfully done, is acceptable in significant pieces but must be disclosed.
Caring for Your Oushak Rug
- Use a quality rug pad: Essential for both safety and rug longevity. A proper pad prevents slipping and reduces abrasion between the rug and the floor surface.
- Rotate annually: Rotating 180 degrees each year ensures even light exposure and foot traffic wear across the entire rug surface.
- Professional cleaning only: Oushak rugs — with their natural dyes and hand-spun wool — require washing by specialists. Ashly Fine Rugs offers professional rug washing and drying through our rug cleaning service at 4222 Richmond Ave.
- Address spills immediately: Blot (never rub) liquid spills with a clean white cloth. Do not use commercial carpet cleaners on antique pieces.
- Avoid direct, sustained sunlight: Even vegetable dyes will fade under prolonged direct sun exposure. Rotate the rug periodically to equalize light exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Oushak Rugs
What is the difference between Oushak and Persian rugs?
Oushak rugs are Turkish, not Persian. They use the symmetric (Turkish or Ghiordes) knot rather than the asymmetric (Persian or Senneh) knot. Their design vocabulary — large open medallions, soft earthy palettes, expansive fields — is distinct from the typically denser, more intricate designs of Persian city rugs. The wool and dye traditions also differ: Oushak wool has a characteristic long-staple quality that ages to a unique lustre.
Are Oushak rugs durable?
Yes — Oushak rugs are known for their durability. The long-staple Turkish wool holds up well under foot traffic, and the medium-height pile compresses over time to a beautiful patina rather than matting. Well-maintained antique Oushaks from the 1880s are still in daily use in homes and institutions around the world.
Can I use an Oushak in a contemporary interior?
Absolutely. Oushak rugs — with their warm, neutralized palettes and open, breathing compositions — are among the most compatible traditional rugs for contemporary interiors. They provide warmth and visual interest without the formality of a traditional Persian medallion design.
How much do Oushak rugs cost?
Prices vary widely depending on age, size, condition, and quality. New hand-knotted Oushaks begin in the hundreds to low thousands. Genuine antique Oushaks in good condition range from a few thousand dollars for small pieces to tens of thousands for significant palace-format examples. We offer pieces at every price point and are happy to discuss options within your budget. Please visit our showroom or call (713) 426-5454.
