In the 1880s, the Manchester trading firm of Ziegler & Co. dispatched master designers to Sultanabad — now Arak, in central Iran — with a singular mandate: to create rugs that would satisfy the evolving aesthetic tastes of Europe’s grandest homes. The collaboration between Ziegler’s European sensibility and Sultanabad’s centuries-old weaving tradition produced a body of work that today commands the highest prices at Christie’s, Sotheby’s, and Bonhams — coveted by museum curators, interior designers at the highest level, and private collectors worldwide. This exceptional palace-sized example, measuring 15 by 21 feet, is woven in a combined wool and silk foundation that lends the pile an extraordinary depth of color and surface luminance.
Its tawny, sun-warmed ground supports a grand floral lattice characteristic of the finest Ziegler commissions: oversized palmettes unfolding like botanical illustrations, curling vine tendrils of generous scale, and naturalistic blossoms rendered with a sophistication that remains unsurpassed in the history of commercial rug production.
