Description
Persian Bijar rugs, from the Kurdish city of Bijar in Kurdistan Province, are known among connoisseurs by a single definitive epithet: the iron rugs of Persia. The title was earned through the legendary construction density of Bijar production — a weft-packed foundation technique, unique to this weaving center, that gives the pile a solidity and structural integrity absent from all other Persian traditions. Where other antique rugs may soften and relax with age, Bijar rugs remain firm and dense as the day they left the loom; where other antique pile may shed and thin over generations of use, Bijar pile resists. Built for the harsh conditions of Kurdish life, these rugs were engineered for permanence, and they have proven, over centuries, to be the most technically durable carpets the Persian tradition has ever produced.
This magnificent 12 by 20 foot antique example presents the classic Bijar field at palace scale: a ground of deep, madder-derived red animated by a dense Herati lattice of palmettes and lancet leaves in ivory, forest green, and deep navy, rendered throughout with the crisp, unsentimental precision that distinguishes Kurdish weaving at its finest from the softer naturalism of Persian commercial production. More than a century after its completion, the foundation remains as solid as compressed wool can be and the pile shows none of the looseness found in lesser-constructed rugs.
