Description
Description
Produced during the Pahlavi era — the mid-20th century decades that saw Tabriz’s carpet workshops reach new heights of technical refinement under the combined pressure of royal patronage and international competition — this exceptional 11 by 16 foot carpet represents the golden chapter of 20th-century Persian commercial weaving. Pahlavi-era Tabriz rugs are now among the most actively sought of all 20th-century Persian carpets: technically superior to much earlier production in their knotting fidelity and design accuracy, and produced with natural dyes and hand-spun wool that have now had seven or more decades to develop the characteristic aged warmth that no contemporary substitute can approach.
This example presents a grand medallion composition on a ground of deep, madder-derived rust — a color that has aged from its original vibrancy to a warmth of extraordinary complexity and depth. The ivory medallion and corner spandrels float against this ground with calm, architectural authority, surrounded by a field of dense Shah Abbasi scroll rendered with the technical precision of Tabriz’s most accomplished workshop production. The border, in complementary navy and ivory, frames the composition with traditional formality. A collector’s rug of the first importance, with a generation of further appreciation ahead of it.
